We just returned from a visit to George Washington’s Virginia estate, Mount Vernon. After living in DC for almost two years now, it was about time we made the short trip! The mansion (although hardly large by today’s standards) is beautifully restored and I can only imagine how much more striking the waterfront estate is in the spring and summer. I was particularly inspired by the vibrant paint colors used throughout the living quarters. This painting of the dining room by Maira Kalman sums up my thoughts exactly! If you’d like to add some presidential flair to your own house, Fine Paints of Europe offers a Mount Vernon Estate of Colours collection. A few of my favorite swatches are above. I only wish I had found Presidential Blue (second from the left) before we re-painted our bedroom!

WOW. These colors are simply breathtaking. Love them! (Also love the quote at the bottom of the picture.)
Love it!! I love walking around the grounds at Mount Vernon, nice place to visit!
I am such a fan of that shade of green!
I agree. We were there a few years ago and the colors are amazing.
I love that jade green color!
I just read about Mount Vernon in Bill Bryson’s new book and he explained how bright paint colors were a sign on wealth in the 1700′s, especially blue and green, so ol’ George would have spent a lot creating a room like that.
Yeah, I’m a nerd. Love your blog, though!
Sounds like a great trip! I love visiting historic homes too. Just bookmarked the Mount Vernon collection of colors!

They’re gorgeous! I’m trying to convince my mom to use “Potomac Blue” in one of the bathrooms at home. xo
