Jewel Box: Helga Wagner

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I’m headed south in two short weeks for a much needed vacation and have resort wear on the brain. Summer is my favorite season (no doubt a result of having grown up on Cape Cod) so the mid-winter resort collections have always been something I look forward to. Even if you don’t have a trip scheduled, the resort collections are like a beacon of hope for warmer days ahead.

In an ideal world, I’d be packing my jewelry round full of Helga Wagner’s Palm Beach perfect jewels for my upcoming trip. Her cone shell earrings with turquoise stones (shown top left) are at the very top of my wish list. Spend some time browsing her site, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Necessary and Proper

Meet Lauren and Van, the duo behind my latest blog crush, Necessary&Proper. If there were such a thing as style ambassador, I’d be lobbying to appoint these two chic peas to represent us here in the District in an instant! Further proof that DC is no longer the fashion black hole you may have heard (Dear New York, please stop spreading those nasty rumors!) Read more about Lauren and Van in their recent Washingtonian article. In the meantime, I’ll be busy stalking all of Lauren’s outfits for further inspiration!

In Pursuit

ring
nail polish | flats | constellation chart | tunic

Just a few things that are on my radar this week:  A. Louise jewelry, the coolest shade of malachite green polish, anything mint for spring, constellation charts and a tunic that reminds me of one of my favorite Celerie Kemble for Schumacher fabrics. Have a great weekend!

P.S a big welcome to any new readers that have found me via Refinery29!

Prepare for Take Off

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Necklace | Scarf | Driving Mocs | Suitcase

This is the time of year when I miss being in college and having a two week spring break just around the corner. I’d gladly take mid-terms all over again for those two weeks of R&R! Luckily, I do have a trip in the not so distant future and have been gathering my travel essentials in preparation for take-off.

My biggest purchase was a new set of DVF luggage scored during a recent One King’s Lane sale. My Dad taught us to never travel in sweats  so I do try and look put together while still being comfortable. Generally, this translates into skinny jeans paired with a tee or sweater. An easy-on, easy-off necklace and security friendly flats dress up the look. I also almost always have a pashmina stashed in my bag to combat the freezing airplane air!

Do you have any trips on the horizon?

Spreading the Love

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Cosabella set | LOVE card | Sugar lip treatment | Lucky Night wine | Ikat dinner plate | Diptyque candle

Valentine’s Day is such a polarizing holiday; people either love it or hate it! I happen to be one of those annoying people who loves it– how could I not, it incorporates some of my favorite things: candy, flowers, hot pink and stationery. A perfect mix, right? Even if you’re not a fan of the holiday, I think you’ll find something above to love. As a chapstick addict, I  can personally vouch for the amazing-ness of  Sugar lip treatment it will make your lips so smooth!

Vintage Jewels

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

We’re without internet in the new place (which is obviously killing me!) but I thought I’d pop in with a little eye candy care of Madeline Weinrib. So gorgeous right? Some people may be “over” suzanis now that they’ve trickled down to the mass market, but authentic vintage pieces truly are beautiful! Such amazing craftsmanship.

My Weekend in Photos

Monday, February 6th, 2012

This weekend was a whirlwind of packing, painting, and moving but we’re finally done! I thought I’d share a few photos of the chaos.

I quickly let my dad and boyfriend know that I’d be in charge of moving all of the “important” stuff so it wasn’t broken. Priorities, people.

They couldn’t seem to understand why I wasn’t tossing these “old magazines”.

My dad spent some quality time with a tape measure, level, and painter’s tape.

Which we all decided was time well spent when this was revealed…

I had a project of my own going on upstairs..

inspired by the tangerine color of my Tory Burch wallet (similar to this).

There’s still a ton to be done but I’m thrilled with what we were able to accomplish in less than a week. A huge thanks to my dad and boyfriend for putting up with me and doing most (okay, all) of the heavy lifting while I gingerly carried my antique mall treasures.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

It’s raining and gloomy in DC today, but I’m secretly hoping that there is more rain in the forecast while I eagerly await the arrival of my Scalamandre umbrella scored on One Kings Lane. This had been a longstanding item on my wish list, so I was thrilled to see it pop up on sale. If you’re interested in purchasing your own, there are still travel and large sized versions available in the yellow colorway, and the large size is available in the black colorway. I’d still kill to have a bathroom wallpapered in this iconic pattern, but for now, the umbrella will have to do!

Rainbow Bright

Rainbow Rag Rug | Anna’s Chair | Notebooks | Wedges | Earrings

If your week is in need of brightening, this round up should do the trick. I’m particularly obsessed with Anne Harwell’s rendition of Anna Spiro’s chair. Anna happens to be one of my very favorite interior designers and I die over this chair. What’s even more amazing is that Anne’s print has been turned into a needlepoint kit. If I only had the skill..

Catching My Eye

Monday, February 28th, 2011

It seems like nautical is always on trend for spring and I’m definitely not complaining.  Here a few things that have been catching my eye and making their way on to my wish list. The scarf is already en route to me and I can’t wait to pair it with one of my Breton striped tees. Who else is ready for spring?!

Tory’s Glory

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

I literally squealed with excitement when I came across these photos of Tory Burch’s New York home on her blog which is one of my daily reads. The photos are from the March issue of In Style which I will be running to the newsstand to pick up on my way to work tomorrow. Have you ever seen a more chic home? Of course not, I mean it’s Tory Burch’s house! I firmly believe that Tory is a modern day style icon and will definitely be taking notes on this feature.  This will have to suffice as my TB fix since regrettably I had to turn down the invitation to her show and blogger’s lunch during Fashion Week because of my new job (you don’t even know how sad I was. I may have even contemplated changing my start date… crazyy!)

P.S Don’t you think she should write a book on style? I’d pre-order immediately!

Capital Style: Read’s Clothing Project

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Update: Love Read’s shirts? Tell him yourself! Read will personally deliver orders to customers in the DC area and is offering free shipping for customers outside of the DC area with code ‘thepursuitofstyle’. Happy shopping!

I stumbled across Read’s Clothing Project via twitter (@thepursuitstyle if you want to chat) and immediately knew I had to include the brand as part of my Capital Style series. Not only am I completely in love with their classic oxfords, (I have my eye on the navy gingham for the bf), they also have a great mission. Read’s Clothing Project donates 20% of profits to school and educational programs in Africa. It’s a win-win situation, your boyfriend, husband, father, brother, friend will look good and you’ll be doing good by getting them a shirt.

I hope you enjoyed learning about another great brand from the District. There will be many more to follow!

Spotted

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Of all my interior addictions, my weakness for beautiful dinnerware might be one of the worst. We currently have no less than four sets of china in our cabinets which even I admit, might be a little excessive for only two people. The polka dotted cuties above are part of the latest collection to catch my eye. The cheerful designs are from London based brand, Lisa Stickley. If polka dots are your thing, you’ll definitely be a fan! Since I’m barred from purchasing any more dinnerware, I’ve got my eye on the Substantially Generous Jug. I’m picturing it filled with bunches or peonies or hydrangeas. So pretty!

Polished

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I would never forget to schedule a manicure again if I had this adorable illustration by Samantha Hahn. I love that it’s a little Warhol-esque, don’t you? The furthest to the left in the second row looks like it could be Chanel’s Rive which I blogged about in my blue post. With this beautiful weather we’ve been having in DC, I’m thinking it’s time to transition from my current favorite, Lollipop by Essie, to something a little lighter. No sure if I’m ready for Rive yet though. What are you wearing these days?

Vogue, Vogue

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Maybe it was fashion week that inspired me, or this gallery wall that has been a perennial favorite. Whatever it was, I’m happy to say that the above vintage Vogue cover will soon be occupying some prime real estate in my apartment. I can’t wait for it to arrive! There have been so many new additions to the apartment that I’m excited to share. I promise it will be very soon!

Shut Eye

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Given the lack of love this little blog has been getting lately, you might be wondering what’s going on. The truth is, after logging some seriously long hours at the office, I’m lucky if I get my face washed and my jewelry off before I pass out. I’m convinced I’d be so much more well rested if I had a set of these gorgeous D. Porthault pajamas to slip on before I hit the hay. Thank you so much for your patience with my less than stellar posts. I promise things will be back to normal soon!

DVF Home

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Diane von Furstenberg is one of my absolute favorite designers. On those days when I just can’t find the right thing to wear, I often find myself reaching for one of her iconic wrap dresses in a punchy print. Given my love for DVF, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the launch of her home collection which debuted this past Friday at Bloomingdales.  It certainly did not disappoint! I’m lusting after a set of dessert plates in one of her signature prints. I would mix these with solid place settings for an undeniably stylish soiree. Have you seen the collection? What are your favorites?

P.S Happy Valentine’s Day!

Positively Shocking

Friday, February 11th, 2011

My cherry red Kate Spade wallet has seen better days and I think it’s time for an upgrade. Rather than going with something “practical” like black, I’m thinking shocking pink will do the trick. Kate Spade and Tory Burch both have great options that I’d love to get my hands on. The Tory Burch is even on sale which makes it all the more enticing. Even if you’re over the shade, (I don’t think I’ll ever be over it), you have to admit that these would never get lost in your purse!

Raise A Glass

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Have you ever seen an advertisement so chic? These vintage Perrier ads by French artist Bernard Villemot stopped me in my tracks. So much so, that I actually purchased a copy of the pink version to hang above our bar area. I love the vivid colors and her Perrier bottle statement jewelry. If only advertisements today were such works of art!

Statement Studs

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Lately I find myself filling my jewel box with what can only be described as statement studs. The bigger, bolder, and bling-ier the better! Rachel Leigh has one of the best collections out there. How gorgeous is the assortment above? I’m having the hardest time picking a favorite but am leaning towards the pink sparkly number or white drops. Which would you choose?

Magnificently Meares

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Have you had a chance to check out the premier issue of High Gloss Magazine? If you haven’t, you’re missing out! As I put some finishing touches on my apartment this weekend, I can’t help but revisit Jamie Meares’ gorgeous home for inspiration.  Jamie’s blog I Suwannee is one of my daily must reads and I could easily drop a paycheck at her most recent venture, Furbish Studio. I absolutely love her bold use of color and expert mixing of patterns–exactly the look I’ve tried to create in my own home. This would be a much longer post if I attempted to describe everything I love about her home so we’ll just leave it at my top three:

1. Scalamandre Wallpapered Bar

2. Monogrammed Zebra Shower Curtain

3. Fab Lamps

Have a great weekend everyone!

Steal the Look

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

I’ve finally replaced most of my ratty furniture from college, but am still on the hunt for a desk. I fell in love with Jonathan Adler’s gorgeous Channing, but unfortunately I don’t think it would be too fiscally responsible of me to spend the better part of a month’s rent on a desk. Sigh, bills really cramp my decorating style! Yesterday, while browsing at World Market, I came across one of their newest arrivals, the Josephine. Very similar to my beloved Channing but for a fraction of the price! No, it doesn’t have the sleek chrome legs or lucite drawer pulls but for only $199 I’d have enough left over to buy some great desk accessories to style it up!

Capital Style: Inslee Stationery

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

D.C is often given the short end of the stick when it comes to things related to style and design. Yes, we may have our fair share of politicos in nondescript suits, but there are also many talented, creative, and stylish Washingtonians out there. In an effort to show that D.C has more to offer than back room deals, power suits, and pearls, I’ve decided to start a new series highlighting some of the amazing people and companies we have here in the District.

First up is Inslee Haynes, a D.C based fashion illustrator, whose work has inspired me to take a little bit more care when dressing in the morning. Oh to be as chic as one of her illustrations! Not only is Inslee incredibly talented, she’s also completely in tune with the fashion world and blogging community. I love that she draws inspiration from luxury lines like Prada’s Spring 2011 ad campaign as well as some of my favorite blogs (be sure to check out her illustrations inspired by The Fashion Magpie, The Man Repeller, and Mrs. Lilien!) If you’re itching for an illustration of your own, Inslee accepts commissioned projects and sells select prints and note cards in her online shop. I’m dying over her Valentine’s Day illustration (first image above)–that hot pink trench!

I hope you enjoyed a peek at Inslee Stationery and I can’t wait to highlight more of the talented people here in D.C!

For the Love of Lucite Continued…

Friday, February 26th, 2010
Do you remember the lucite coffee table I found on craigslist last week? Well, at 9am last Saturday I pretty much jumped out of bed and was on the road ready to load up my trunk, that table was going to be mine!
I thought I’d share a picture with her all cleaned up because I know the craigslist picture I previously posted left a little something to be desired. It’s all about seeing the potential though right?

What do you think? Was my $85.00 well spent?
Have a GREAT weekend!

Manic Trout Discount!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
I was pleasantly surprised when reading through comments to see that Sierra Bailey, owner of Manic Trout, had left a comment offering a very generous 15% discount to Starfish and Sundresses readers!
From now until March 1st use the code “Starfish” to receive 15% off at the Manic Trout website.

You’ll find so many more goodies at Manic Trout’s website, check out these adorable lucite flower earrings:

Happy shopping and thank you Sierra!

Currently Coveting: Manic Trout Necklaces

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
I’m a big fan of statement necklaces, as evidenced from past purchases. In my opinion, a great statement necklace is the easiest way to take your so-so outfit to the next level. Enter my latest obsession found after yet another etsy sesh–Manic Trout.

I am literally chomping at the bit for that elephant necklace. Vanessa wore this same necklace on Gossip Girl in season three, as if you needed another reason to want it! I think Manic Trout’s jewelry would look amazing dressing up everything from a tee shirt on the weekend to a button down at the office. Better yet, the starfish necklace with a little white dress in the summer…
I’m.In.Love!

P.S if you were loving the necklace from yesterday you can find it at another one of my favorite purveyors of statement necklaces, KEP Designs.

The Making of My Photo Wall

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
In our apartment we have a huge, boring, what I like to call “rental beige” (you know the color) wall. Since we’re unable to paint, I decided a photo wall would be a great way to break up the space and add some much needed color.
A few weeks back I posted about the set of Penguin Postcards I ordered from the UK because I was too impatient to wait until they became available in the U.S. Well, they finally came and now I have the perfect pieces for my gallery wall!
My first step was picking out my favorite post cards from the set. There were so many great ones it was tough!

Here’s what I initially picked out and narrowed down from:

Next I picked up some 4×6 Ribba frames from Ikea and framed the 18 post cards I had chosen. At $2.99/frame you can’t beat Ikea’s prices!
Finally, after trying several different layouts I decided on one that I liked. I decided to include a Sebastian Fernando Boher silkscreen I bought from the Natural Curiosities sale on One Kings Lane a few weeks ago.

We’ve decided to leave the hardest part, hanging the frames, until this weekend. I’ll be sure to let you see the final result after we get everything measured out and hung correctly.
If you have any tips pleave me a comment, I’d appreciate all the help I can get!

Etsy Find: The Mayberry Sparrow

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
During one of my marathon etsy sessions (don’t you just get sucked in?) I came across Corrabelle’s shop: The Mayberry Sparrow. After clicking around a bit, I immediately added it to my favorites. Corrabelle makes the most amazing hand carved rubber stamps that I can imagine a million different uses for. I would totally make my own hand block print wrapping paper!
Here are some of my favorites:

Corrabelle will even make custom stamps for your save the dates. Aren’t these birds too cute?

Better yet, the prices are completely reasonable ranging from $6.00-$30.00! The only problem is picking a favorite!

For the Love of Lucite!

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Pretty pretty please let this lucite coffee table found on craigslist be mine! Sadly, at $85 I’m sure someone has already scooped it up. I mean, who wouldn’t when there are so many beautiful rooms featuring lucite out there?!
UPDATE: It was still available!! I got the table woohoo!

Domino

Keep your fingers crossed one will be making an appearance in my living room soon!
P.S in answer to your questions about my inspiration board:
The corkboard is actually a Marshall’s find. I just loved the shape of the frame!
The necklace on there is actually a U.S bicentennial medallion. I love our country and the medallion reminds me each day to be thankful for it and for our troops that keep us safe.
Have A Great Weekend!

My Inspiration Board

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
I completely forgot to show you the last of my “snowed in” activities–my inspiration board! I had a great time putting it together and now it is just waiting to be hung. I’m thinking I’m going to put it in my entryway so I can be reminded of things that inspire me every morning as I start my day!

What do you have on your inspiration board?

Meet My Matador

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
When I first spotted Happy Menocal’s watercolors over at Matters of Style I just knew I had to add one to my own home. The bright colors and oh-so-serious expressions on their faces just made me smile. Happy was an absolute pleasure to work with and quickly had my matador en route to me.
Here he is waiting to be hung:
If you like Happy’s work you can purchase originals at Jonathan Adler’s store in NYC. Happy tells me they are beautifully framed. I hope to get there in the future to check them out!

And the opposition:

Some other favorites from Happy’s sketchbook:

Only 50 matador prints were made, so you can feel pretty exclusive if you snatch up one of the last ones over at Happy’s website.
Here’s hoping Happy makes prints of more of her work!

Anne Hepfer’s Colorful Library

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Maybe I have a hangover from Valentine’s Day hues, but I just can’t get enough of red interiors. Check out Anne Hepfer’s gorgeous library:

Isn’t the suzani tapestry on the seagrass wallpaper fantastic? Hepfer picked it up at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. I really need to start my globe trotting adventures so I can fill my future home with equally amazing things!

I think Anne is just as chic as the interiors she designs. Love her Tory Burch tunic!

If you’re looking for a source for your own authentic suzani, check out Uztextile’s ebay shop. Lulu Dekwiatkowski named them as one of her sources over at her new blog Trail of Inspiration which I’m loving already.

Here’s hoping the transition back to work after a long weekend isn’t too painful!

I Heart You This Much!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
Wishing you a weekend filled with love, hugs, kisses and champagne toasts.

Graphic Image Winner!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
I apologize this is coming a little later than expected. I spent a considerable amount of my evening digging my car out from a snow drift–not fun! I wrote all of the entrees on pieces of paper and had the bf pick. The lucky winner he picked is:

Grayson Saige!

Please send me an email with your info as well as which 9″ notebook you would like and if you would like it personalized.

If you didn’t win, remember that Graphic Image is having a massive sale right now and you can still score some great goodies!

I think the snow is getting to me. Right about now I’d give anything to trade places with this model from the new Harper’s Bazaar. I wouldn’t mind having her outfits either!

Things to do When You’re Snowed In: Part Two

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
D.C has decided to become the new Alaska and my apartment has become hibernation headquarters. So what to do when you’re cooped up with some extra time on your hands? Well, you know from my previous post online shopping is my first go to. But next to that, a little DIY project is always a good alternative.
Since I’ve declared my love of all things chevron (and Rubie Green) in the past it wont surprise you that I chose an East Village inspired fabric for my little lamp shade project. Getting those zigs and zags to go around a lamp shade was tough! My shade is definitely nowhere near perfect but for the time being I love the pop of color it adds to my desk area.

Some of my favorite things pictured in this photo include: a vintage flower embroidery found in a thrift store, a funny print by Poor Dog Farm, a mini Nantucket basket filled with my Stila lip glaze collection, a framed National Gallery of Art post card of my favorite Matisse painting, 100 Years of Fashion Illustration, Tocca Isabella candle, my little brass elephant and Kate Spade notepad.

**Don’t forget to enter the Graphic Image Giveaway! Winner will be announced tomorrow!**

Valentine’s Day Vixens

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
While watching the snow continue to fall outside my window, I thought it might be fun to pull together some outfits for Valentine’s Day. A little sexy, and a lot sweet, I’m sure your Valentine would love you in either of these ensembles! xoxo

The Ones That Got Away

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
In the world of online shopping, is there anything worse than that terrible little box that pops up saying “out of stock” or “unavailable” after you’ve added something you’ve been lusting over to your cart?

That was my experience trying to buy these New Arcadia glasses from Vivre that I’ve been absolutely obsessing over. I suppose I couldn’t expect them to last at the crazy price of $36.00 for a set of four.

I guess I could always console myself with some of Vivre’s other New Arcadia offerings

Sigh…it just wont be as fun sipping a cocktail without those little zebras!

P.S Don’t forget to enter my Graphic Image giveaway!

Things to do When You’re Snowed In: Part One

Monday, February 8th, 2010
With 20+ inches of snow on the ground, D.C all but shut down this weekend. This gave me plenty of time to catch up on my blog reading and subsequently a little online shopping!
Over at A Cup of Jo I found this collection of 100 postcards by Penguin Books. Each postcard is a different vintage book cover. I might be a little bit of a nerd, but I just had to have this!

I’m a sucker for good packaging and these come packaged in a faux book box!

I’m so excited to look through all the different titles. Wouldn’t it be great to send a friend one of their favorite titles?

Better yet, why not frame some of your favorites like Kate Spade has done below.

Unfortunately the set isn’t available in the U.S until October, 2010, but I didn’t let that stop me in my mission! I bought mine on eBay from this seller in the UK. A little obsessive? Definitely. But hey, when you’re snowed in you have to pass the time somehow right?
I hope you all had a great weekend!

Call of the Wild

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Animal print, when done well, is completely classic and the epitome of chic–at least in my opinion. Wouldn’t you love to take a walk on the wild side in one of these gorgeous coats?

If Jackie wore it, I simply must follow suit!

Sail Away

Thursday, February 4th, 2010
I’m on a quest to find the perfect striped bateau neck tee for spring. So far it looks like Calypso and Peter Beaton are in the lead. I know this might be a little premature considering our furry friend the groundhog has doomed us to six more weeks of winter, but I can’t help but think of brighter days ahead!

Untitled
P.S I bet this exhibit at le Musee National de la Marine was ahh-mazing. What I would have given to be in Paris last summer!

Nautical inspired frocks by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Swoon…

Show Stoppers

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
I just had to post these gorgeous turquoise lamps from The Sunday Times Market. Aren’t they beautiful? Better yet, from now until March 1st, 20% of all sales will be donated to the Hope for Haiti Relief Fund. You know I’m all about shopping for a cause!

Tempting, Very Tempting…

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
If you’re headed somewhere tropical this winter click on over to Calypso and pick up one of these Juno dresses. They’re on final sale for $49.00– an absolute steal! If I wasn’t saving my pennies for a trip to New York I’d have picked up one in every color!

I’ll Trade You…

Monday, February 1st, 2010

My J.Crew ensemble and Longchamp tote for your Missoni wrap and Cartier bag. Sounds like a fair trade right? I’ll be flying back to the freezing weather of D.C today, sadly not looking anywhere nearly as chic as Fergie.
Here’s hoping my pink pashmina will keep me somewhat warm considering I neglected to bring a coat!
