BE MY GUEST

One of the drawbacks of living in DC (like most cities) is that space is at a premium. I daydream about the day when we’ll have a guest bedroom to fancy up for visitors, but for now, an air mattress is what we’re working with.

Our accommodations might not be five star, but that’s no excuse to throw in the towel. Here are my essentials for entertaining house guests:

-Bedding: Even if you only have an air mattress to offer, quality bed linens make a huge difference! I try and make up our air mattress just as I would a regular bed.

-Candle and matches: Burn a favorite candle to keep things fresh. Just make sure the scent isn’t too overpowering.

-Extra Toiletries: Having a few extra tooth brushes and other essentials on hand can save a trip to the store.

-Bath Towels: Freshly washed and the fluffier the better!

-Flowers: If there’s time, I like to grab some blooms for small arrangements in our entry and living room and a small bud vase in the bathroom.

-Cocktails: Arguably the most important component in a memorable visit!

How do you prepare for house guests?

  1. Love all the guestcessories!! I have never had a guest room either … until Erin headed off to college … it is still “her” … but gives me a little freedom to fluff up for my friends!! Always a carafe of water and a couple of glasses (monogrammed are my favorite) and some fresh greens or flowers … that will do the trick!! xo

  2. These are great! I love the matches. I also love to add a guest book they can write about their stay and sign it. This way years ahead we can go back and reminisce.

  3. After many homes, we finally have a Guest “Suite”! MC and I have had a ball filling it with fun items. We went on a wonderful trip to Maine last summer. We stayed at the Camden Harbour Inn! What a heavenly place! We copied so many of their amazing “features”. To add some whimsy we put a framed sign on the back of the door. It instructs the guests how to escape the room in case of an emergency. It tells them to open and the window and climb out! We have had so much fun with this room. Yes, the linens and towels are so important and make a world of difference. I’m a little slack on the flowers. The nearest florist is miles away..
I have also named the room The Epiphany Suite …after my blog.

  4. All great suggestions. I especially love the pitcher. Putting that on my wish list immediately!

P.S. Don’t feel bad about the air mattress. I’ve found, as a guest, that a good quality air mattress trumps a crummy traditional mattress any day.

  5. I love the idea of fresh flowers to make them feel right at home. If you get a sec, I’d love to hear your thoughts on my latest posts!
