Capitol Hill Books is one of my favorite neighborhood haunts. Fair warning, if you’re claustrophobic this isn’t the place for you. The the books are literally stacked from floor to ceiling and the pathways are just wide enough for one person to weave their way through.
In spite of the obvious fire hazard, it’s one of my favorite spots to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. You never know what you’re going to find on those chaotically organized shelves.
Maybe it’s six copies of Love in the Time of Cholera, or maybe it’s one of Cecil Beaton’s diaries like I walked away with on my last visit. The thrill of the hunt makes the potential for claustrophobia induced panic attacks almost worthwhile!

I couldn’t love the look of books or reading books more if I tried.
Love these photos and you sharing your DC favorites. Hope you had a great weekend!
Thanks, Nikki!
I just spent the weekend visiting a friend who lives on Capitol Hill, and loved exploring this bookstore and the Eastern Market…naturally, I was so happy to find this in my inbox today!
Glad you had a chance to visit! xx
This is my favorite bookstore in DC! It has so much character and is the perfect place to cozy up and read on a Sunday.

Agreed, I love places with neighborhood charm!
I LOVE Cap Hill books and the adorable/cranky proprietor!
P.S. How did you convince him to let you take pictures inside?
Whoops, I didn’t realize he doesn’t like photos. These were taken upstairs.
I think it’s mainly to stop people looking for bargains on expensive books they want to re-sell. I’m sure it’s not a way to stop excellent free publicity
.
Love that place
What a great find – we’ll have to stop in the next time we’re in DC!
every tijme I see “love in the time of cholera” i think of two things, high school in espanol and also the movie “serendipity” xoxo
My most favorite kind of bookstore!
