The Pursuit of Style | Quoted

Would you believe that there is over a 40 year difference between these two rooms? The first is from Tory Burch’s Spring 2010 ad campaign which was shot in her home by Tina Barney (check out the behind the scenes video). The second is circa 1965 by legendary interior designer Billy Baldwin for Woodson Taulbee.

Both rooms feature Quadrille’s Arbre de Matisse which was originally developed by Baldwin and inspired by the Matisse drawing which you can see hanging above the sofa.

The rooms reminded me of the Dowager Countess’ amazing one liner on this week’s episode of Downton Abbey: “Nothing succeeds like excess.” I think I’ll be adopting that as a new life motto.

Have a great weekend!

  1. My mom told me that an interior designer once told her that a truly beautiful room will always be beautiful. At first I rolled my eyes but as I’ve gotten older I’ve seen that there is truth to this. This posts reminds me of that. As do the rooms Dorthy Draper designed at the Greenbrier.

    • Isn’t it funny how a lot of those eye roll sayings from mom really do ring true? I’ve definitely had the same experience with things my mom has told me 🙂

  2. Isn’t it funny how classic style endures the test of time?! And snatching up that quote for myself. I think unconsciously that’s always been my life motto, but starting now I’m going to be fully aware! 😉
