Mount Vernon by Candlelight

Several years ago I bought a Living Social deal for tickets to Mount Vernon in an effort to check off a DC attraction from my list. Growing up in Massachusetts, my experience with historical preservation sites was limited to elementary school field trips to Plimouth Plantation which is a decidedly different experience. Early colonists definitely weren’t enjoying the comforts that the Washingtons enjoyed at Mount Vernon.

I remember leaving that first tour shocked and inspired by the vivid interiors (you can read the post I wrote after that initial visit here) and easily envisioned them translating into homes today. I’d actually be curious to know if Miles Redd has taken inspiration from the estate for some of his work. Could we call George Washington (who was highly involved in the estate’s design) the original Miles Redd? It might have the same cache as President in some design circles…

All kidding aside, I was thrilled to receive an invitation to take a candlelight tour of Mount Vernon this past weekend. The holidays are the only time you’re able to tour Mount Vernon after dark and I’m sure you can tell from the photos above what a unique and beautiful experience it is.

If your a design dork like myself, you’ll love getting a closer peek at the interiors, and if you have little ones they’ll love meeting the camel (yes, a live camel) and listening to the carolers. This weekend, December 21 and 22, are the last two nights to take a tour and I’ve got two tickets to giveaway to a local reader!

The Details: Win two tickets valid for admission to any one Mount Vernon by Candlelight tour on December 21, 2013 or December 22, 2013. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable and valid only for one redemption. The event occurs rain or shine and no outside food or beverages are allowed on the estate.

To Enter: follow the steps in the Rafflecopter widget below (if you’re reading in a feed or via email you’ll need to click over to enter) and I’ll be contacting the winner Thursday, December 19.

  1. Those pictures are beautiful! I have yet to travel up to the DC/Virginia area, so until I do that, gorgeous photos like the ones here will do quite nicely.

  2. I had no idea about the candlelight tour, your pictures so capture the home’s beauty! I feel lucky that I was able to visit Mt Vernon in September. At the time, I was totally focused on where Mrs Kennedy had her State dinner for the Pakistani president/wife at Mt. Vernon. The tour guide knew what I was talking about, if no one else on the tour did, and showed me the area.

  3. Happy New Year Lindsay!
Love Mt Vernon! I went on vacay a few years ago & it was lovely! I especially loved the green paint in the dining room and the carved marble mantle. Sounds like it was such a treat for you to visit at night! Best to you in 2014!
