The Pursuit of Style

Just a few things that I happen to think are pretty great…

I picked up this cashmere sweatshirt on super sale and it’s just as heavenly as a cashmere sweatshirt sounds. On the same shopping trip I succumbed to the printed denim trend and bought these floral skimmer jeans. The pattern is just barely there so I don’t feel quite as bold wearing them.

Essie’s ‘Bikini So Teeny’ is going to be on my nails all spring–so dangerous convenient that you can buy Essie at CVS now! I’ve been wearing these hexagon earrings from Vivid by Esther’s etsy shop on repeat. They’re simple but chic and go with everything. I’m already trying to decide what color to buy next.

My admiration for India Hicks is well documented on this blog and lately I’ve been re-visiting her book Island Life for inspiration. I would love to stay here someday. When I was uploading these photos from my camera, I noticed the first two photos shared the exact same color palette as these potted plants I spotted on in the neighborhood a few weeks ago. I guess life imitates nature?

SUNDAY STYLE

The Pursuit of Style

This week I constantly felt like I was two days behind and just trying to keep my head above water. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about the weekend! While I was trying to keep it together some pretty great stuff was going on…

I discovered that one of my favorite artists, Happy Menocal, has a new online shop. I bought one of Happy’s matador prints almost four years ago and have enjoyed watching her growing recognition and much deserved success over the years. I might just need to get a set of matching notecards!

Kate Spade’s highly anticipated new brand, Saturday, finally launched! It’s just as colorful and playful as you’d expect from Kate Spade, but the price points are much more affordable. I especially loved the watercolor print that’s featured throughout the collection.

Tuckernuck released its first ever online catalog for Spring 2013 and the photos (not to mention the clothes) are gorgeous! Use code: PURSUITSPRING20 for 20% off something that catches your eye!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

LET’S CHAT: FIVE THINGS

Alison Chemla | The Coveteur

By now I’m sure you’ve seen these “five things” posts floating around the internets where people are asked to share five things about themselves that you might not know. Well, Elizabeth asked me to spill so here goes!

ONE: I love the idea of heels but wear them almost only on special occasions. I really wish I could tap into some sort of inner street style-ista and look effortlessly chic wearing 5 inch heels with skinnies but to be honest I feel like they just slow me down and I am one fast walker!

TWO: I’m a huge book nerd. Always have been, always will be. In middle school I actually remember taking great pride in the fact that I filled my entire “reading journal” (a composition notebook) and had to start a second one. Do I even need to describe how awkward I was in middle school? Probably not, because I’m pretty sure we all were. P.S If any DC ladies out there are looking for new members in their book club I’d love to find one!

THREE: like a few others have mentioned (Grace and Victoria) not studying abroad is one of my biggest regrets. Somehow I convinced myself that I only had four years in college but I had my entire life to travel. Unfortunately it’s not as easy as signing up for a program when you’re out of college and moving abroad for three months (without the safety net of a group of friends going through the same experience) becomes exponentially more daunting. Plus there’s that whole job thing.

FOUR: I’ve never been one of those girls who’s had their wedding planned out since they were a little girl, BUT I do have a note on my iphone dedicated to potential future baby names. I LOVE children and thinking about future babies makes me way happier than engagement rings and wedding dresses.

FIVE: I totally had a quarter life crisis. Up until the summer after my junior year I thought I’d apply to law school. Then I had an internship in a law office and realized I hated it… It took me a while to find my path but (most days) I finally feel like I’m on the right track!

Rather than pass this along to more bloggers, I thought I’d turn things over to you and ask you to share some things (doesn’t have to be five) about yourself in the comments. Don’t leave me hanging as the only one over sharing here! :)

This 1960s DC townhouse designed by Hillary Thomas reaffirms my faith in the fact that there are risk takers here in DC. Just look at those lacquered peacock blue walls!

DC, we do not have to be resigned to beige… Yes we can use color with abandon! Yes we can mix patterns! Yes we can wallpaper! Say it with me now.

That’s the platform I’m running on: Banish The Beige 2015.

THE OXFORD

There are a lot of lists out there–entire books even–dedicated to the items you “must have” in your wardrobe. I think they’re great as loose guidelines but I also believe that personal style is just that…personal. If we all sat down and made a list of our “must haves” I’m sure that there’d be some overlap (who wouldn’t include a white tee, or the perfect pair of jeans on their list?), but I’m also pretty confident that there’d be a lot of variety too. I am not a hat person (wish I were!) but maybe you look awesome in them and couldn’t live without one. Even with the items we have in common we’d all style them a little differently to make the look our own and that’s what makes fashion interesting–at least to me!

If I were to make my own list of “must haves” a classic oxford shirt would definitely make the cut. Dress it up, dress it down, it just works. People often want to pigeon hole the oxford into the pearls and ribbon belt category but they’re far more transitional than that. Here are a few looks I’ve been pinning lately that have given me some new inspiration for wearing mine: rolled up sleeves and stacks of gold bracelets, buttoned up under a white blazer, tucked into black skinnies, paired with a classic trench, or tucked into a leather skirt. I just love that last look for spring. If I thought I could pull off a leather skirt this is the one I’d go with!

So naturally I have to ask… What’s on your must haves list? Would love to know your top three!
