I’ve been on a Diana Vreeland kick as of late. As I think I mentioned last week, I recently finished Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana Vreeland which I really enjoyed. So much so that I wanted more Diana. I wanted to hear her voice and see the eccentric mannerisms I had read about.

Thankfully, the documentary film on Diana’s life, The Eye Has to Travel, was released on Netflix earlier this month. My copy finally arrived this week and after watching I’m even more inspired and fascinated by Diana. I can’t even think of a modern day equivalent to compare her to. Is there anyone?

I especially love Diana’s “Why Don’t You..” column from her early years at Harper’s Bazaar. The quote above is one of my favorites–and perhaps one of her more practical. Another famous “Why Don’t You…” suggested washing your blond child’s hair in dead champagne, as they supposedly did in France.

These days, covering your walls in maps is hardly as fanciful as it might have been when Diana originally suggested it. The rooms above are a few of my favorite examples. What do you think, would you follow Diana’s advice and wallpaper a room in maps of the world? I’d love to!

I recently read Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana Vreeland and in it there’s a great story about Lauren Hutton. Lauren was just one of the many models made famous after receiving Diana’s seal of approval. Interestingly enough, she actually changed her name from Mary to Lauren, inspired by Lauren Bacall, who was one of Diana’s other great discoveries.

The photos above are from Lauren’s very first photoshoot for Vogue in 1966. As the story goes, Richard Avedon had turned her down at least three times before Diana convinced him to put her in front of the camera.

Diana was right, of course. Avedon was captivated and the rest is history. Great inspiration to keep on trying, right?
Happy weekend!
